Here’s to a New Year

In many ways 2015 was a good year, but it was also a hard year. A year filled with challenges, both professional and personal.

It was also a year of introspection, where I learned a lot about myself, found some answers, but also realized there were more questions than I had expected. Questions about identity, home, putting down roots (and where) or continuing the transient, nomadic life…

These are not unique to me – I know many TCKs (and non-TCKs) struggle with these questions. I just didn’t expect them to hit me so hard and to find myself searching for clarity in my own contradictory thoughts and feelings.

When I was finally able to define those questions, however, it was such a comfort. I had felt their shadows lingering in the back of my mind for a while, but had been unable to understand what weighed on my heart. I may not have the answers yet, but at least I now know what I’m searching for – and that makes all the difference.

These realizations, along with other challenges sorted by year’s end, allowed me to close off 2015 at peace and more than ready for 2016. I am excited for this new year and all the new adventures it will undoubtedly hold.

As for my blog: I unfortunately and unintentionally moved away from writing in 2015. I had much to say, but couldn’t find the words to express it. I am very grateful for all of you who still stuck around and took the time to read and comment when I did write. Your presence and comments are always a source of joy, motivation and comfort.

One of my hopes and resolutions for 2016 is to do more of what I love – and writing is very high on that list. Hopefully this is just the first of many more posts to come this year. So, here’s to more writing, more laughing, more loving, more travel and great adventures in 2016.

On that note, I wish you all a very happy new year and I hope 2016 is an amazing year!

New Year, New Adventures

Before I start my ramblings for 2013, I want to wish everyone a very happy new year! I know I’m a little late, but better late than never, as they say! I hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday season, a beautiful christmas and a fantastic start to 2013.

I have been quite absent from my blog these past months, due in part to being busy with other things, but mostly due to lack of inspiration. There are moments like that – sometimes I have writing overflowing out of me, other times the inspiration well dries up a little. It can be frustrating because I miss writing when I’m not doing so much of it, but it feels so good when I finally get into it again. So hopefully 2013 will wake me up a little! I am definitely planning on feeding my creativity in this new year (not just figuratively: one of my goals is to try at least one new recipe a month) and I hope to do more writing! I definitely wrote more in 2012 than 2011, so if I can keep up that trend in 2013 I would be very happy!

Another way I intend to play around with my creativity and hopefully learn a lot in the process is with photography. After months of looking at cameras, reading reviews, asking suggestions and advice from many bloggers, a very generous (and loving) Santa delivered my first ever DSLR (a nikon d5100). To say that I am excited would be an understatement. I am like a kid with an awesome new toy. To all the bloggers who gave me such detailed and great advice: thank you! Your suggestions and thoughts were so helpful throughout this process. To my much loved Santa: thank you, thank you, thank you. It was a beautiful surprise.

And now, the fun part…pictures, pictures, pictures! I have a lot to learn and I’m looking forward to every minute of it! Oh, and any thoughts, suggestions, comments, advice – they’re always welcome. 🙂

I’m hoping that 2013 will be a year filled with adventures of all sorts. On the creative side, I want to learn as much as I can about photography and how to really use my dslr properly. I want to write more – and I need to admit that as much as inspiration plays a role, so does having some kind of discipline to sit down and write. I’ll definitely be trying to stick with the one new recipe a month (I’ve already done 2 this month!); maybe I’ll write about some of them here. I also hope 2013 will be a year of exploring more, seeing new places and having travel adventures. Whether those places are near or far, just a little day trip or a longer getaway, I always love them. One of my favorite things is to go someplace completely new with my husband and explore together. Sharing that sense of adventure and discovering an unknown place together is an amazing experience. We’ve already driven to 2 new states this year, and enjoyed beautiful snow-covered landscapes and amazing views. It was a wonderful day for so many reasons and I look forward to many more like it.

Here’s to 2013: may this new year be filled with love, laughter, and many new adventures.

The Whispering Brook

The leaves crunch underfoot as the half-frozen brook gurgles nearby.

The squirrels continue their acrobatics above, jumping from branch to branch.

Apart from the rustle of the leaves where they scrounge for fallen nuts, it is silent.

The silence of a fresh start, the silence of a new year.

A beautiful silence.

The stillness is interrupted by the lively chatter of the brook.

The water rushing between the frozen banks is music to my ears.

I love the sound of running water in the wild.

The sound of a stream, a river, a brook, gives me a deep sense of peace and tranquillity.

The water dashing over rocks, tripping over fallen branches, running towards an unseen finish line.

Is it sprinting towards a lake, an ocean, a pond, a waterfall…?

Does it matter?

No matter the destination, it is always moving forward, never backward.

So like the water I love so much, which brings serenity to my soul,

I too will look ahead; I too will move forward.

I will dash and I will trip,

And although the finish line is unseen (and hopefully still very far away),

I will continue to go towards it, enjoying every step along the way.

It is a new year.

It is a new adventure.

I wonder where the current will lead me…
