Who I Am

I am a third culture kid.

Of that I will never be rid.

I’ve grown up among worlds,

Like many other boys and girls.

I am made up of one travelling heart,

Which is often spread worlds apart.

I am internationally grown,

But I have a hard time defining home.

I am made up of many places,

Like a dice of six faces.

The places I’ve lived and loved,

And those that run through my blood;

Each of them is a part of me,

Part of my story and my journey.

Much of it is yet to be told,

But to one thing I will always hold:

I’m an adult third culture kid,

Of that I never wish to be rid.

  1. Wonderful! : ) Don’t know if you’ve ever considered this, but it’d be interesting to hear about your experiences in different countries – Christmas in Paris? a birthday celebration in the Philippines? With cultures being so varied, it’d be fun for us ho-hum non-TCKs to read. I don’t mean to explain the cultural differences but choose a memory and just relate what it was like wherever you were at. Does this make sense? Just a thought, maybe for the new year. As always, it’s a joy to read what you’ve written. Keep it up! : )

  2. Thanks Dounia and Paige! I read a nice article just recently by Elaine Sciolino who writes for the New York Times (not sure of her last name) about Thanksgiving in Paris, a nice blend of cultures- you can probably find it with a few key word searches and your poem and comment made me think of it.

  3. Great post Dounia – I also loved the one from November called the Hidden Story. I feel like my blog is like that as well – it tracks the twists and turns and they aren’t all about overseas or growing up overseas. I’d love to have you do a guest post by the way!
