The Little Clownfish That Wreaked Havoc

Well, this post was originally going to be about my latest skiing adventures, but nature decided to throw a few snowflakes our way this past weekend, so the skiing entry will have to wait just a little longer.

So, with the help of my lovely new camera, let me introduce you to today’s topic:

About a week ago, the weather channel turned on to high alert as it warned us about the winter wrath making its way through the states, heading towards the unsuspecting Northeast. Ok, unsuspecting may not be the right word, since we heard about this storm every second for at least a week before it hit, but I figure I’m allowed some poetic license here. So while state officials scrambled to get enough snow plows, salt and crews ready to prevent disaster, and the power companies attempted to avoid a riot by fanning out their crews to potential outage zones, I remained baffled by the name choice for this storm: Nemo. When I hear the name Nemo, I think of a little clownfish who was the star of a Disney/Pixar film. A clownfish. Not a shark, not a whale, not even a barracuda. Doesn’t quite seem like the most appropriate name for a seemingly apocalyptic snow storm, but maybe that’s just me.

So there you have it. The build up to the storm of the century (again, poetic license), the blizzard of the decade (this is almost accurate)…They got this one right. We definitely got some snow. Actually, that’s a gruesome understatement – we got A LOT of snow. So much snow that our apartment parking lot looks like the bottom of a ski slope. It’s been a workout so far. No need to go to the gym this week!

Enough words for now, let me leave you with some photos. I thought I would begin with a type of time lapse of the blizzard, and then I’ll post some of my favorite photos.

Nemo Time Lapse:

This is towards the beginning of the snowfall - probably a couple of hours in. Just barely a dusting, considering what followed.

This is late at night - the blizzard was in full swing at this point, but would get even worse shortly after!

And now for some of my favorites:

This photo deserves a little background story: this storm was the perfect opportunity for me to really play around with my new camera. I tried all sorts of settings (special setting for snow photos, for dusk photos…), and it was a huge learning experience for my manual focus. This is one of my favorites using the manual focus…And there were a lot, believe me. That’s what happens when you give me a DSLR with a pretty big memory card. I was having a blast!
Cars? What Cars?
Oh yes. This is our parking lot. This is why I said no need for the gym this week. The past 3 days we have worked out so much with hours of shoveling. Yes, shoveling – not snowblowing, not plowing, manual shoveling. I would say it took about 2.5 hours just to clear our car. And we didn’t stop after our car.  But truth be told, it’s been awesome!

Until next time...
Until next time…

I hope you enjoyed, and that all of you affected by the blizzard stayed safe and warm! Also, any feedback or comments on the photos are always welcome as I’ve just started using my DSLR and would definitely love to learn more!

  1. OH – those evening photos are just gorgeous! Don’t you love that light!! I must say the title of your post made me laugh until I got the clownfish connection … and yeah, I thought Nemo was a really dumb name too! But it was quite the storm and I must say I enjoyed it. Isn’t February in New England awesome? Your text is fun, your photos are terrific and this is a great post. Keep playing with that camera! 🙂

    1. Thank you so much, Paige! Your comments always make me so happy 🙂 And I must agree – February in New England is awesome, I’m loving this snow! Although really, they could have come up with a better name… 😛 I’m so happy you liked this post, and thanks again for your wonderful comment!

  2. Terrific shots. These remind of the kind of snowstorm I saw fairly often as a child, but just don’t anymore. I hope the little clownfish wasn’t too hard on you.

    1. Thank you very much! I lived in Wisconsin when I was a kid, and I remember loving all the snow we had (my parents probably loved it less since they were the ones cleaning the car and driveway!), so it’s fun to relive those memories and I’m a big fan of snow. For a little clownfish, he dropped quite a bit of snow around here (around 30+ inches), but it’s all so beautiful that I don’t mind! 🙂

  3. Beautiful – you captured the light really well! Those snow drifts are something else. Wow.

Great new header photo, too 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, Cortney! I really appreciate your comment, especially since you take such beautiful photos, and I’m happy you liked the new header too. The snow drifts were impressive, and even without the drifts we were at 30+ inches. It’s crazy, but it’s also really fun and beautiful! 🙂

    1. It was impressive. We got quite a bad snowfall in Jan. 2011, when 2-3 storms hit in just a couple of weeks and completed overloaded us with snow and ice, with really low temperatures so that really made a mess! This one was a HUGE dump in one storm, but it’s a little warmer this time, so that’s been helping the clean up, although I think this snow is here to stay for a little while. It makes for some beautiful scenery though, and with the really mild winter last year, I missed this 🙂

  4. Look at you and your new camera! What kind did you get (you may have mentioned it before, but I’m old and my memory is sorely lacking)? I love that sunburst in your evening shots.

I have to laugh at weather forecasters: we’re expecting 2-3 inches of snow tonight, and the weather folks have been talking about if for DAYS, and have had all their reporters on special stand by. i’m not holding my breath about this supposed “snowstorm” that is predicted, but the to-do being made over it sure is fun to watch!

    1. Thank you so much, Kate! Any positive comments from you mean so much because I really admire your photography! I have a Nikon D5100, and I am having SO much fun with it – I’ve been testing out different settings, learning to use the manual focus and having such a blast! 🙂

I am always amused by the weather forecasters. I know they’re trying to prepare everyone and prevent any problems, but sometimes they just go a ‘little’ overboard. They’re saying we might get 2-3 inches tonight, but after 30+ inches, it’s tough to get worked up about 2-3. 😉 But just in case it did snow over there, good luck and stay warm 🙂

    1. Thanks so much! I really appreciate your comment, and I’m so happy you enjoyed them! I really like that shot with the door and all the snow on either side of the path…It really captured how everything looked outside, and how welcoming and cozy home looks after shoveling for hours! 🙂

  5. Gorgeous photographs! Feel like I was there 🙂 well done for all the shovelling, have yet to have a snow experience that needed a shovel! Sending hugs your way 🙂

    1. Thank you so much, Sarah! 🙂 It was a crazy amount of snow and a lot of work, but it’s also so fun and beautiful! I hope all is well on your side of the ocean, and hugs to you too! 🙂

p.s. It’s been great to have you blogging again – looking forward to more lovely posts! 🙂

  6. These shots are beautiful and give me a whole new perspective on the blizzard. I live in MA, so we were hit pretty hard and like you, I spent 3+ hours shoveling out just my car. Thanks for a second look at the storm… suddenly I’m remembering beauty and not annoyance!

    1. Thank you very much! I really appreciate your comment, and I’m so happy the photos could give a more positive twist to all that crazy snow we got! It was definitely a lot of work, and the amount of snow was unbelievable, but at least it was really beautiful – I try to focus on that (and on the workout we get shoveling), since it makes the situation better! 😉
